Cleaning vinyl siding

The Vinyl Siding Institute reported that vinyl siding is the most popular choice for new homes for 20 years in a row. It has been the leading exterior cladding in the US. In the northeast, 75% of new homes were built were clad in vinyl siding. For many people, the real attraction of plastic siding is low maintenance.

Since vinyl siding is an exterior material it can accumulate dirt, muck, and stains contributed by rust, pollen, spider webs, and even bird and insect dropping. Mold and mildew can grow in the shady and moist areas.

Cleaning vinyl siding is an easy job and we’ll show you the safest way to clean your home.

What's the best way to clean vinyl siding:

  • Use a soft cloth or a short bristle brush on a long handle. Avoid using highly abrasive materials like a steel wool. These materials will damage the vinyl siding.
  • To remove light mold and mildew stains mix 70% water and 30% white vinegar in a bucket and brush on the vinyl siding, working from the bottom up. Gently hose of the residue.
  • For a stronger solution mix 1/3 laundry detergent with 2/3 powered general household cleaner along with 1-quart liquid laundry bleach and a gallon of water.
  • For tougher stains, you can use general household cleaners (e.g., Murphy’s Oil Soap, Clorox, Windex, Lysol, etc).

Avoid using the following materials:

  • Highly-abrasive scrubbers or steel wool. Any of these materials can damage the surface of the vinyl siding.
  • Bleach cleaning solution almost destroys all of the mold and bacteria but it can be harsh on the skin, lungs, and the environment.
