Why roof ventilation is important

Monday, March 27th, 2017 by Weathertite Systems

Having roof ventilation is critical; without proper ventilation, heat can rise into the attic and cause moisture build up, which will eventually lead to mold and rotted studs. A roof ventilation system allows for air to flow through the home so that any unwanted hot air can escape without causing damage. A properly ventilated attic should be the same temperature as it is outside; this proves that air is flowing through nicely.

An attic can reach temperatures up to 140° F on a 90° F day. Temperatures this high can cause the wood inside the attic and the shingles on the roof above to become damaged. A cold roof is a safe roof, and this is only possible with proper roof ventilation. Even in the winter, the heat from inside the home rises up and can be trapped in the attic, causing problems, like ice dams. Ice dams are formed when the heat in the attic melts the snow on the roof above, causing it to refreeze at the bottom portion of the roof. This can cause leaking into the home; ventilation is very important!
