Ice Dams - What they are and how to prevent them

Thursday, January 26th, 2017 by Weathertite Systems

Ice dams are ridges of ice that normally form at a roof’s edge, preventing any melted snow to drain off the roof. This excess water, more times than not, can cause damage to one’s home; ceilings, walls, and insulation could all be affected in the process.

When an ice dam forms, there is normally a correlation between the heat from the home, the temperature outside, and snow on top of the roof that causes the problem to arise. In most cases, the heat from the home rises up into the attic and then straight to the roof which causes the accumulated snow to melt. As the snow melts, it travels down the roof and freezes again at the edge; this is because heat cannot normally reach this part of the roof and it is at a colder temperature.

Preventing ice dams could be done in a number of ways. Typically, the action that is taken starts with snow removal. If there is no snow on the roof, no ice dam can be formed. Here at Weathertite, we provide snow removal services, so don’t wait until it’s too late! Another way to further prevent ice dams and leakage into your home is to make the ceiling air tight, allowing no warm air to travel into the attic. Also, you may want to increase the insulation in the ceiling to avoid heat loss to your home.

Remember, always be careful and it is advised to have a professional handle any roof work, especially during the winter months.
