6 Home Improvement Projects To Start Before the Summer Ends. [By Sabrina Hunter]

As the summer activities start to wind down you may notice some areas around your home have been neglected. After school starts you will finally find some time to work on some repairs.

Gutter Guards Installation:

Gutter guards can protect your gutters from getting clogged from leaves, roofing granules, and debris resulting in an overflow and leaks in your home. Once you install gutter guards you will never have to think about it again especially with fall around the corner. Installing gutter guards before the leaves fall is important.

Plant a Tree

Planting a tree in the right position can act as a windbreak in the winter months. A row of trees or shrubs can help reduce wind blows and snow. Trees can help save energy during the summer months as it can provide shade. Watching trees grow is a fun project for the family.

Inspect your Roof

Now is the time to insulate your roof and caulk the vents and flashings so you won't have a drafty home in the winter. Keep an eye out for broken seams on your roof and tighten any loose shingles. It is important to maintain your roof as it will help extend the life expectancy.

Inspect your Windows

Check the exterior of your home for any gaps in the window and door frame. Apply caulk to reduce the chances of heat or AC escaping your home. Caulking is an inexpensive and very effective way to help keep heating and cooling costs down.

Maintain Driveways

Before the winter arrives to make sure to seal any cracks in your driveways and walkways. Cracks can expand in extremely cold temperatures and can hurt your curb appeal. To prevent this from happening, seal the cracks with sealant for concrete or asphalt driveways. Maintaining the driveways and walkways can extend life and boost curb appeal.

Wash your Home

Wash the organic growth on your home's exterior to prevent the premature aging of your home. Simply, grab a brush and dip it in a bucket of water and vinegar (2 parts of water and mixed 1 part of vinegar). Gently brush the vinyl siding sideways and working your way up panel by panel and then hose off the residue. An easier and faster option is pressure washing the home. However, care must be taken when operating the machine, if used incorrectly it can cause an injury or damage hard surfaces. If you are unsure on how to operate the pressure washer, consult a professional.
